The problem isn't CG for the most part. A ton of games nowadays show real gameplay that looks wayyyy better than the final product. The problem is vertical slices.For anyone not familiar, early in development the devs need something to pitch to executives/show off at events like E3.

So they build a vertical slice, which is where they build a very small part of the game (single level or mission or scenario) and then polish and bug squash it all the way to gold status completion.The problem is that once they build the final game, it often requires wayyyy more resources (being a full game and all) than just that tiny original slice they built to show off. So it ends up not looking quite as good as what they showed off originally to the public.This has caused problems for the last 10 years or so.
