  1. Invision Power Board 1.3.1 Final Game

Hello everyone, good evening to you all! This is my first post in this community, nice to meet you all! Well, here is my forum situation:We have been using IPB ever since version 1.01, and now we're using 1.3 and haven't upgraded since IPB went paid (recently patched to 1.3.1 and modded to work with PHP 5 from Ibforen.de, although I don't know if those patches will work because my host still runs PHP 4).Anyway, we've been with IPB for nearly 4 years now, and with 1.3 for almost 2 years. The board has many mods (some that I created myself from mere guesswork, and I'm not a programmer) and over 20 skins that we've worked hard to create and tweak to our preferences. In short, the board is very personal and familiar to us.Now just yesterday, one of my co-admins suggested we should convert to SMF. His reasons are:1) IPB 1.3 is obsolete and therefore vulnerable to hackers (even though we did install the 1.3.1 patch)2) Even though my host still runs PHP 4.x and MySQL 4.x, one day they probably will upgrade and we will need forum software that works with the new technologyI'm aware that I can convert my board to SMF with a script and not lose posts/members, but I'm wondering if those are legit concerns he brings up. Isn't IPB 1.3 perfectly safe to use with the 1.3.1 security patch installed?

Is anyone running IPB 1.3.1 under PHP 5 and MySQL 5 and can testify that it truly breaks under those versions? Finally, does SMF even run on PHP 5/MySQL 5?I am willing to consider his suggestion, I just want some other, outside opinions. Besides, my IPB 1.3 is my baby, I've managed it for 4 years and don't want to let it go. If I make the switch, I want it to be well-justified.Thanks for any insights! First of all, welcome on board, is a pleasure to have you between us.

Now about your question, I been working on IPB for about 2 years, even though I had work under phpbb, SMF and vB, I still preffer IPB, and I been using IPB 1.3.1 for a while (run out of money to buy a licence ). I think it's OK to stay with it some more and try to get them money for a paid license. No script is 100% secure. I had my brand new VB hacked last night because a smartarse from Lebanon or God know where wanted to send some political message. They broke into the entire server and I had 5 sites hacked (directories, phpBB, IPB and VB). Doesn't matter the script, all were messed. We had to re-copy the index pages).

I had a files backup and restored it ASAP. And my host did have this too.So. Keep backups close (daily -at least- database backup and a FULL Site backup).

If you're getting hacked it takes few minutes to have it up and running.I also have 2 IPB forums. My problem is that I hate the script, but I use it now. Maybe I'll switch to VB or paid IPB, but so far keep a backup close. SMF runs just fine under PHP 5 and MySQL 5.While I would personally recommend going with SMF, you should take the time to play with it more before you make a decision (play with both 1.0.8 and 1.1RC3 - 1.1RC3 has a lot more features than 1.0.8).

You might also want to consider setting up a copy of SMF alongside your board, converting the board to SMF (you won't lose any data - SMF just pulls the information from the database, then modifies it as needed before inserting it into the database) and letting your users decide which one they like best. You didn't say anything about the money situation. I think buying a license for IP.Board would be your best bet, but, of course, if you just can't afford the license or won't consider software that's not open source on principle, then that's not an option.Even if you upgrade to a later version of IPB, you're going to lose your mods. Those 20 skins sounds like a huge investment you've made, and would require major work if you want to transfer them to the new board. I'm guessing you'd just try to install one or two at first.

Cleaning your old database for stuff that's not needed can also be a lot of work. In those respects, migrating to SMF may not be much more troublesome than upgrading.Security-wise, I understand Invisionfree is simply unsafe. Does v1.31 include the patch for the security hole that were exploited in 2.1.5, the famously 'videotaped' one? It was supposed to be a security hole that had existed for a long time and then finally discovered. No one supports invisionfree, if it's hacked then there are no one standing by ready to fix it immediately. However, perhaps with invisionfree you're not on most hackers' radar. It's an old board, no prestige in hacking it.If you're not switching boardware, then I'd recommend that you'd at least backup quite often.
